A temple reborn

Four years ago, this temple was almost forgotten.

The 650-year-old Kalkulam Sri Govindaraja Perumal Temple stood in ruins. Broken walls, worn-out structures, and fading memories were all that remained of what was once a magnificent temple.

But perhaps Perumal had other plans.

In 2022, the first steps towards restoring the temple began. Since it comes under the HR&CE Department, approvals and funding had to be secured first. This was achieved by two well-wishers, both named Swaminathan. Then came months of follow-ups, planning, coordination, delays, and plenty of waiting. There were times when work moved quickly and times when it came to a standstill. Yet, no one gave up.

Slowly, the temple began to come alive again.

The Vimanam and Garuda Sannidhi were restored by HR&CE under the leadership of Shri Rathinam Sthapathi. Samskaara Trust which we started took up the restoration of the compound wall, Madapalli, front Gopuram, Deepa Sthambam, and the Bhaktha Anjaneya Sannidhi.

The villagers also became part of this beautiful journey by contributing towards the new flamed granite flooring. Every stone laid carried the devotion of the people.

Then came the day everyone had been waiting for.

On 5th July 2026, the Maha Samprokshanam was performed. More than 2,000 devotees gathered from far and near, filling the air with chants of “Govinda… Govinda…” As the sacred waters were poured over the kalasams, 4 eagles circled above, leaving everyone filled with wonder. It was a moment that many will remember for the rest of their lives.

Today, Sri Govindaraja Perumal, with Sridevi and Bhudevi, stands in all His glory once again. The Azhwars and Sri Ramanuja bless devotees from the Ardha Mandapam. Garudazhwar stands proudly in his restored mandapam, while Bhaktha Anjaneya welcomes devotees from his beautiful new stone-pillared shrine near the sthala vrisham, Pavazha Malli tree.

This temple is known for blessing devotees with the gift of land and a home. But beyond that, it is a place where one can truly feel peace and divine energy.

A project like this is never the work of one person.

Our heartfelt thanks to Shri Srinivasan Gurukkal, whose dedication, patience, and leadership held the entire project together, supported by the trustees of Samskaara Trust and the people of Kalkulam. Shri Kannan from nearby Nelvoy village as well as Jaishankar, whose presence itself helped many sticky situations resolve peacefully.

Special thanks to Shri Karthik Sthapathi, Contractor Shri Durairaj, and his hardworking team from West Bengal. Many of them were Muslims, yet they worked on this temple with great care and respect. They stayed in this small village for months, learnt to communicate with the locals, cooked their own meals, and treated Kalkulam like their own home. Their work reminds us that service and devotion rise above all differences.

Our sincere thanks also to Shri Rajasekar from Tambaram, who arranged for a special stone-washing team led by Shri Thyagarajan from Thirukanoor. Their careful work on the entrance mandapam and Deepa Sthambam uncovered beautiful sculptures that had been hidden for years.

A heartfelt thank you to the many, many donors whose generosity and faith made this dream possible.

Our sincere appreciation also goes to our dedicated local team—Subramani, Velu, Vedagiri, Manikandan, and Sudhakar—whose hard work and constant support played a vital role throughout this journey. Special mention must be made of C. Dilli, who travelled from Chennai with his entire family and extended immense support throughout the event.

When we look back at this journey, it feels as though Perumal had already decided that His temple would rise again. He simply handpicked the right people to make it happen.

From a forgotten ruin to a temple full of life once again…

மீண்டும் உயிர் பெற்ற ஆலயம்

நான்கு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு, இந்தக் கோவில் கிட்டத்தட்ட மறக்கப்பட்ட நிலையில் இருந்தது.

650 ஆண்டுகள் பழமையான கல்குளம் ஸ்ரீ கோவிந்தராஜ பெருமாள் திருக்கோவில், சிதிலமடைந்து நின்றது. இடிந்த சுவர்கள், சேதமடைந்த கட்டிடங்கள், பழைய பெருமையின் நினைவுகளை மட்டுமே தாங்கி நின்றன.

ஆனால், பெருமாளுக்கு வேறு எண்ணம் இருந்தது போலும்.

2022-ஆம் ஆண்டு, திருப்பணிக்கான முதல் அடிகள் எடுக்கப்பட்டன. கோவில் இந்து சமய அறநிலையத் துறையின் (HR&CE) கீழ் இருப்பதால், அனுமதிகளும் நிதியும் பெறுவது முதல் சவாலாக இருந்தது. இந்த முக்கியமான கட்டத்தில், சுவாமிநாதன் என்ற திருநாமம் கொண்ட இருவரின் அயராத முயற்சிகளும் வழிகாட்டுதலும், தேவையான அனுமதிகளையும் நிதியையும் பெற்றுத் தருவதில் முக்கியப் பங்காற்றின.

அதன் பிறகு எண்ணற்ற முயற்சிகள், தொடர் ஒருங்கிணைப்புகள், பல தடைகள், காத்திருப்புகள். சில நேரங்களில் வேலை வேகமாக நடந்தது; சில நேரங்களில் நின்றுவிட்டது போலத் தோன்றியது. ஆனால் யாரும் மனம் தளரவில்லை.

மெல்ல மெல்ல கோவில் மீண்டும் உயிர் பெற ஆரம்பித்தது.

விமானமும், கருடாழ்வார் சந்நிதியும், திரு. ரத்தினம் ஸ்தபதி அவர்களின் தலைமையில் இந்து சமய அறநிலையத் துறையால் புதுப்பிக்கப்பட்டன.

நாங்கள் தொடங்கிய சம்ஸ்காரா அறக்கட்டளை, சுற்றுச்சுவர், மடப்பள்ளி, முன் கோபுரம், தீபஸ்தம்பம் மற்றும் பக்த ஆஞ்சநேயர் சந்நிதியின் திருப்பணியை மேற்கொண்டது.

புதிய ஃபிளேம்டு கிரானைட் கற்கள் பதிக்க, ஊர் மக்களும் தங்களால் இயன்ற பங்களிப்பை வழங்கினர். பதிக்கப்பட்ட ஒவ்வொரு கல்லிலும் அவர்களின் பக்தியும் அன்பும் நிறைந்துள்ளது.

இறுதியாக அனைவரும் ஆவலுடன் எதிர்பார்த்த நாள் வந்தது.

2026 ஜூலை 5-ஆம் தேதி, மகா சம்ப்ரோட்சணம் சிறப்பாக நடைபெற்றது. அருகிலும் தொலைவிலும் இருந்து 2,000-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட பக்தர்கள் கலந்து கொண்டு, “கோவிந்தா… கோவிந்தா…” என்ற பக்தி முழக்கத்தால் ஆலயம் முழுவதும் அதிர்ந்தது.

கலசங்களில் புனித நீர் ஊற்றப்பட்ட அந்த நேரத்தில், நான்கு கழுகுகள் ஆலயத்தின் மேல் வட்டமிட்டுப் பறந்தன. அந்தக் காட்சியை கண்ட அனைவரின் மனதிலும் அது மறக்க முடியாத தெய்வீக தருணமாக பதிந்துவிட்டது.

இன்று, ஸ்ரீதேவி, பூதேவியுடன் ஸ்ரீ கோவிந்தராஜ பெருமாள் மீண்டும் தம் முழு பொலிவுடன் அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். ஆழ்வார்களும், ஸ்ரீ ராமானுஜரும் அர்த்தமண்டபத்தில் அருள்காட்சி தருகின்றனர். கருடாழ்வார் புதுப்பிக்கப்பட்ட மண்டபத்தில் கம்பீரமாக எழுந்தருளியுள்ளார். தலவிருட்சமான பவழமல்லி மரத்தின் அருகே, புதிய கல் மண்டபத்தில் பக்த ஆஞ்சநேயரும் அருள்பாலிக்கிறார்.

இந்தத் திருத்தலம், நிலமும் வீடும் கிடைக்க அருள் புரியும் தலம் என்று பக்தர்களால் நம்பப்படுகிறது. அதையும் தாண்டி, மன அமைதியையும், இறையருளையும் உணர வைக்கும் ஒரு புனித இடம் இது.

இவ்வளவு பெரிய திருப்பணி ஒருவரால் மட்டும் சாத்தியமானதல்ல.

இந்தப் பணியை ஆரம்பம் முதல் இறுதி வரை அர்ப்பணிப்புடன் வழிநடத்திய ஸ்ரீனிவாசன் குருக்கள் அவர்களுக்கும், சம்ஸ்காரா அறக்கட்டளை அறங்காவலர்கள், கல்குளம் கிராம மக்களுக்கும், மேலும் அருகிலுள்ள நெல்வாய் கிராமத்தைச் சேர்ந்த திரு. கண்ணன் அவர்கள் மற்றும் திரு. ஜெய்சங்கர் அவர்கள் ஆகியோருக்கும் எங்கள் மனமார்ந்த நன்றிகள். அவர்களின் பங்களிப்பும், நிகழ்வின் அனைத்து ஏற்பாடுகளும் சீராக நடைபெற உறுதுணையாக அமைந்தது.

திரு. கார்த்திக் ஸ்தபதி, ஒப்பந்ததாரர் திரு. துரைராஜ் மற்றும் அவரது மேற்கு வங்காளத்தைச் சேர்ந்த உழைப்பாளிகள் குழுவிற்கும் எங்களின் சிறப்பு நன்றிகள். அவர்களில் பலர் முஸ்லிம்கள். ஆனால் இந்த ஆலயப் பணியை மிகுந்த அக்கறையுடனும் மரியாதையுடனும் செய்தனர். பல மாதங்கள் இந்தச் சிறிய கிராமத்திலேயே தங்கி, உள்ளூர் மக்களுடன் பழகி, தாங்களே சமைத்து உண்டு, கல்குளத்தையே தங்கள் சொந்த ஊராக எண்ணி உழைத்தனர். பக்திக்கும், சேவைக்கும் மத வேறுபாடுகள் இல்லை என்பதை அவர்கள் நிரூபித்துள்ளனர்.

தாம்பரம் திரு. ராஜசேகர் அவர்களுக்கும் எங்கள் மனமார்ந்த நன்றிகள். அவரின் ஏற்பாட்டில், திருக்கானூரைச் சேர்ந்த திரு. தியாகராஜன் தலைமையிலான குழு, நுழைவு மண்டபம் மற்றும் தீபஸ்தம்பத்தை கல் சுத்தம் (Stone Washing) செய்தது. அதன் பிறகே பல ஆண்டுகளாக மறைந்து கிடந்த அழகிய சிற்பங்கள் மீண்டும் வெளிச்சத்திற்கு வந்தன.

இந்தக் கனவை நனவாக்க உதவிய ஏராளமான நன்கொடையாளர்களுக்கு எங்களின் மனமார்ந்த நன்றிகள். அவர்களின் தாராள மனப்பான்மையே இந்தத் திருப்பணிக்கு உறுதுணையாக இருந்தது.

அதேபோல், சுப்பிரமணி, வேலு, வேதகிரி, மணிகண்டன், சுதாகர் ஆகிய உள்ளூர் குழுவினரின் tireless உழைப்பிற்கும், இடைவிடாத ஒத்துழைப்பிற்கும் எங்களின் நெஞ்சார்ந்த நன்றிகள்.

குறிப்பாக, சென்னையிலிருந்து தனது குடும்பத்தினர் அனைவருடனும் வருகை தந்து, நிகழ்வு முழுவதும் அளப்பரிய ஆதரவை வழங்கிய சி. தில்லி அவர்களுக்கு சிறப்பு நன்றியைத் தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறோம்.

இந்தப் பயணத்தை திரும்பிப் பார்க்கும்போது, இந்தக் கோவில் மீண்டும் எழுந்து நிற்க வேண்டும் என்று பெருமாளே முடிவு செய்து, அதற்குத் தேவையான ஒவ்வொருவரையும் அவரே தேர்ந்தெடுத்தார் என்று தோன்றுகிறது.

சிதிலமடைந்த நிலையிலிருந்து, மீண்டும் கம்பீரமாக எழுந்து நிற்கும் கல்குளம் ஸ்ரீ கோவிந்தராஜ பெருமாள் திருக்கோவில் இன்று பக்தர்களை அன்புடன் வரவேற்கிறது.

வாருங்கள்… பெருமாளை தரிசியுங்கள்… அந்த தெய்வீக அதிர்வை உணருங்கள்… அவரது அருளைப் பெறுங்கள்.
